2007 Lilith Feminist History Symposium
9 November 2007
University of Melbourne, Australia
The annual Lilith Symposium is a valuable forum for new and established scholars to present research in feminist history and related areas. Following last year's symposium, A Feminist History Of Violence: History as a Weapon of Liberation?, this year's theme is:
Her-story: Histories of Feminist Representation
We welcome papers on the ways in which feminism has been represented in a wide range of media. This may include film, television, radio, theatre, visual art and written texts. We encourage histories of representations of feminism in mainstream media and academia as well as histories of counter- and sub-cultural representations of feminism. We are particularly interested in papers that:
- address the ways in which differences of sexuality, class, ethnicity, race and politics have impacted on representations of feminism;
- look at the role feminist representations have played in the development of feminist epistemologies;
- analyse the role representations of feminism have played in feminist movements on local, national and transnational levels;
- consider the particular difficulties feminists have faced in representing feminism, structurally, institutionally and ideologically;
- and present histories of non-traditional media and untraditional uses of media to represent feminism.
Papers should be between approximately 15 to 20 minutes and should be based on substantial and original historical work. Papers presented at the symposium may be considered for publication in the 2008 Lilith: A Feminist History Journal. Abstracts must be received by July 15 and may be sent or emailed to the above address.
