Panel Title: Visual Modernity, circa 1900
Chair: Paul S. Moore (Ryerson University – Toronto)
At the turn-of-the-last-century the logic of our modern visual culture fell into place. Cinema, Automobiles, Comic Strips, Shop Windows, Postcards, Artwork, Magazines, Packaging, Ready-to-Wear, Subdivided Real Estate, and much more besides, plus new philosophies and sociologies to describe and make sense of such novelty. Papers in this session should explore and revive visual modernity, circa 1900, through historical case studies or reevaluations of historic sociologies.
