An interdisciplinary conference to accompany the exhibition "Between Worlds: Voyagers to Britain 1700-1850" at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Drawing on some of the individuals and ideas in the exhibition, the conference aims to consider issues related to cultural exchange and entanglement, and different forms of portraiture and biography. Speakers will explore aspects of the multicultural history of London and Londoners’ and visitors’ experiences of cultural diversity pre-1900. The conference is divided into three sections: Exhibitions and Spectacle, Multicultural London, and Transnational Biography. May 10 and 11, 2007. Ondaatje Lecture Theatre, National Portrait Gallery. Tickets: £35/£25 concessions. Speakers include David Bindman, Stephanie Pratt, Romita Ray, Dian Kriz, Lissant Bolton, Ros Poignant, Wangui Wa Goro, Rozina Visram, Kate Fullagar, Miles Ogborn, Caroline Bressey, Colin Chambers, Hakim Adi, Ludmilla Jordanova, Annie Coombes and Jos Hackforth-Jones.
