During 2007 the United Kingdom and many other countries throughout the world will commemorate the bicentenary of the 1807Abolition of the African Slave Trade Act that ended the slave trade throughout the British Empire. To mark the significance of this important international historic event, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Equiano Lecture Series will present a symposium titled, Unifying the Divine & the Secular: The Role of Theology and the Law in the Abolition of the Slave Trade. This two-day event will investigate the salient moral and legal arguments that shaped pro and anti-slavery attitudes during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Symposium presenters will consider the thoughts, actions and opinions of pro and anti-slavery historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, Olaudah Equiano and William Wilberforce. The symposium will explore the role of evangelical theology in the development of the movement for the abolition of slavery and the slave trade. It will also emphasize the principal role that Blacks throughout the Atlantic world played in the abolition of slavery and the slave trade. This symposium will blend
scholarly presentations with living history performances to encourage
new and evocative ways to present and teach this dynamic and often
controversial history. Presenters include: Vincent Carretta, Kahlil Chism, Reginald Davis, Morris Henderson, Andrew Levy, Eric Metaxas and James Walvin. To register and to view the full symposium schedule visit ColonialWilliamsburg.com/Equiano
