This call for papers is based on a panel on the topic of “(Non)Consumption of Food in Japan. Past and Present” which was held at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) in March 2007. Our idea is to create a volume of ten collected essays on food in Japanese history that is organized chronologically and includes food-related topics from early Japanese history and pre-modern Japan to food and food culture in contemporary Japanese society. We welcome papers that address food throughout Japanese history from either a historical point of view and/or a sociological/anthropological angle. Our own research focuses on cuisine in the Tokugawa period (Eric Rath) and on the emergence of the Slow Food Movement in contemporary Japan (Stephanie Assmann). Other possible topics we could imagine would for example address food and the question of identity and self, essays on cuisines, taste and methods of food preparation, thoughts on food in relation to national identity, local food cultures versus globalizing food cultures, the increasing popularity of Japanese food in countries outside Asia, gender and/or social (in)equality in relation to food. These are just some broad ideas and we are open to other topics and suggestions. A tentative deadline for the submission of papers is January 1, 2008 and we aim for chapters that range from 5,000 to 9,000 words. Anyone who works on the topic of food/food culture in Japanese history and would be interested to contribute an essay to our volume, please send us an abstract of your research by June 1, 2007. For the submission of abstracts and/or further questions, please contact either Eric C. Rath at erath@ku.edu or Stephanie Assmann at StAssmann@aol.com.
