We are inviting editorial contributors to a new series of social history reference books for the academic library market. The Handbook to Life in America series is composed of 9 chronological titles and we are assigning the first 3 titles:
1) The Colonial and Revolutionary Era: Beginnings to 1783
2) The Early National Period and Expansion: 1783-1859
3) The Civil War and Reconstruction: 1860-1876
Each title has 16 chapters on the following topics:
1) Introduction (summary of the history of the period)
2) Family & Daily Life (structure of the family unit, etc.)
3) Material Culture (everyday products, artifacts, etc.)
3) Social Attitudes (social structure, how people view each other, etc)
5) Cities and Urban Life
6) Rural Life
9) Science and Technology
10) Entertainment and Sports
11) Crime and Violence
12) Labor and Employment
13) The Military and Wars
14) Population Trends and Migration
16) Public Health, Medicine, and Nutrition
The Handbook to Life in America series is being published by Facts On File, Inc., and is a production of Golson Books, Ltd. Rodney P. Carlisle, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Rutgers, serves as General Editor, reviewing all submissions for historical accuracy and acceptability.
Each contributor is assigned one or more chapters per the title and chapter lists above, with each chapter assigned as 5,000 words Deadline for submission is June 1, 2007. Further chapters lists and author guidelines are provided. If you are interested in contributing to this interesting project, it can be a major publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing credits. We are offering a $250 honorarium for each chapter.
As a next step, we will e-mail you the list of chapters available and guidelines. In turn, we would like prospective writers to briefly explain their historical expertise or credentials.
