Biographical Dictionary of the People’s Republic of China is a reference work edited by Dr. Yuwu Song of Arizona State University and published by McFarland & Company, Inc., Publishers. Scheduled for completion in 2007, it will contain alphabetically arranged entries on prominent personalities in contemporary China. The project documents around 1,000 Chinese individuals who contributed, for better or worse, to the development of Chinese life and culture since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The book will be thorough, but by necessity, selective. Though weighted toward political figures, it includes personalities involved in business, military, academia, medicine, social movements, the arts, entertainment, and athletics. Besides a chronological, objective description of the person’s life, providing facts and dates, when possible, an in-depth analysis of the subject will be provided identifying the individual’s contributions and importance. The section of an authoritative and weighty evaluation will set this book apart from the other existing books on the same subject. The editor invites those wishing to contribute articles.
