The organising committee for the conference "Identities in Transition" to be held in Mexico City between the 1. and 5 of June 2007 is seeking further panellists for a special session dedicated to "History and Memory in the Context of Conflict and Displacement" that will take place during the conference.
This special session which has been proposed by Randa Farah from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Western Ontario (Canada) examines the reshaping of history/memory in the context of conflict and displacement. It highlights the political dimension of historical reproductions, the shifting borders between official histories and popular reconstructions of the past, the interplay between remembering and forgetting especially as mediated by generation and gender, the particular significance of oral narratives and life histories in struggles over identities, territory, land and political sovereignty. The panel draws on different case studies to discuss these issues and the role that history/memory plays in the reconstitution of collective identities, especially in the context of displacement and dispersal across different geo-political borders.
Proposals for this special session should address the general themes of the conference, which aims to interrogate storytelling, memories and identity constructions from a wide range of perspectives, definitions and in their manifold cultural and social manifestations. This year the conference will have a special focus on Identities in Transition and spaces and narratives of identities. Papers addressing remembering and forgetting of the past as well as translations between cultures and re-negotiations and re-constructions of cultural identities in one way or another are particularly welcome.
We welcome submissions from all branches of the social sciences, humanities, as well as the arts. Graduate students are encouraged to participate. Papers will be considered on related themes and topics from a wide range of perspectives. Presenters are encouraged to interpret the themes of the conference broadly and may explore any historical period, with any geographic focus.
Papers will be considered on related themes and topics from a wide range of perspectives. 500 word abstracts should be submitted to the organising committee in English, Castilian, German or French by 28. March 2007. The conference languages will be English and Castilian.
Interpretations of the conference theme ranging from the predictable to the surprising are encouraged.
