The conference, which will take place April 12-14, 2007, explores the history of non-metropolitan urban settings. It features papers that deal with the history of small cities during the early modern or modern eras in both western and non-western contexts. In bringing a diverse range of scholars together, the conference provides an opportunity to compare approaches, methods, and sources. Panelist seek to explore the distinctive experiences of small-city life across time and space, to consider the development of secondary urban centers in different historical contexts, and to define further the history of small cities as a distinctive subject of inquiry within the larger field of urban studies. To facilitate discussion, papers will be made available in advance to conference participants. Preregistration deadline is March 30, 2007. The program is available at http://www.bsu.edu/middletown/scconference/.
