Chapter authors wanted for vol. 3 of the "Conflicts in American History" series, on the Early Republic, 1789-1850. The work is under contract with Bruccoli Clark Layman/Manly, Inc. Contributors will receive $500 for essay chapters that will consist of the following elements: 1. 2000-3000 word background essay introducing the conflict, the people involved, the nature of the conflict and its resolution. 2. A specific chronology of the conflict 3. 10-20 historical documents both in facsimile and in reprinted text form, each with an objective head note (150-300 words) that correlates to the conflict 4. A list of recommended readings.

South Carolina against the Nation: the Compromise of 1820 and tariff repudiation, 1828-1832
The United States and the Haitian Revolution: inimical conceptions of republicanism and race among the new republics of the Western Hemisphere, 1791-1806
Indian survival in the old N.W.--Tecumseh and the War of 1812
Texas Annexation and the debate over expansion of slavery, 1836-1844
Rights on the High Seas: the Amistad case and the campaign against the slave trade, 1840
Personal combat: dueling and fighting, and struggles to outlaw these practices.
The struggle of the Mormons against American society during their westward progression, 1820s-1840s
Slave rebellions: The Denmark Vesey plot (or another major slave revolt)
Textile workers vs. early industrialists: the struggle for the ten-hour day in Massachusetts, 1830s-1840s
Immigrants vs. Natives--the Charlestown Convent, and anti-immigrant riots, 1834 (or other nativist confrontation)
The peace movement and the Mexican-American War, 1846-48
