National Conference on Culture and Society in Nigeria
Call for Papers
The centrality of culture to national development continues to attract the attention of policy makers and scholars. As part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and the universally recognized potentials of culture for sustainable development, the United Nations as well as the Federal Government of Nigeria is once again re-emphasizing the strategic role of culture in national and international cooperation and development. The Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in conjunction with the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) is organizing a two day conference on the above theme. Scholars with interest in any aspect of Nigerian history, culture and society are invited to present academic papers around the following or related sub-themes:
· Traditions of origin and migrations
· State formation and empire building
· Political structures and systems of government
· Economy and society
· Law, justice and morality
· Religion and worldview
· Folklore and music
· Visual and performing arts
· Gender issues
· Medicine and healthcare delivery systems
· Indigenous languages and oral literature
· Inter-group relations
· Popular culture
The conference organizers will provide lodging at OAU Conference Centre for participants whose presentations address the central issues in any of the sub-themes. Papers delivered during the conference will also be assessed / edited and published by CBAAC immediately after the conference.
All submissions are to be made electronically through the e-mail address below. Interested participants should submit abstracts of about 200 words by March 05 2007 via e-mail attachment to historyoau@yahoo.com. In addition, each abstract should reflect the authors contact details such as institutional affiliation, status, e-mail address and telephone numbers. Authors of accepted abstracts would be informed by 07 March 2007.
Full text of papers should be submitted before March 21 2007 by e-mail attachment in Microsoft word format to historyoau@yahoo.com.
