Akeia Benard’s research has explored the changing relationship between the early Rastafarians of Jamaica and the cultural use marijuana. This lecture will focus on the shifts in social structure and material conditions under which marijuana became a religious and political symbol. She will discuss how this work can provide a useful framework to diachronically study the development of ideology and religious symbolism in human culture.
