This interdisciplinary one-day conference considers the making of political, imperial and individual identities in the work of Harriet Martineau (1802-1876). Confirmed speakers include the leading scholars Catherine Hall (UCL), Cora Kaplan (Queen Mary), Deborah Anna Logan (Western Kentucky), Linda Peterson (Yale) and Valerie Sanders (Hull). Panels are on Economics and Globalization: Cultural Encounters; Mind and Body; Language and Translation. Organized by Cora Kaplan (Queen Mary) and Ella Dzelzainis (Birkbeck), the conference will be held at the Institute of English Studies, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU on 21 April 2007.
