Life on an 18th-Century Warship
Hendrick Hudson Library, Kings Ferry Road, Montrose, NY 10548
Hear the British side of the American Revolution from a Royal Navy Captain, as Michael Callahan, in character, explores the hypothetical voyage of HMS Valkyrie, a 74-gun British ship-of-the-line, as she sails from Portsmouth, England to New York in the year 1782. Learn about the structure and handling of the Valkyrie, her armaments, and about the lives of those sailing aboard her - including the officers, crew, marines and women and children who joined them. Hear about life aboard ship during their days at sea, including encounters with fierce storms, harrowing entanglements, and the loss of life to disease. Discover what living, working, and fighting conditions were like as you magine yourself sailing aboard this 18th-Century warship.
NMHS is honored to present Michael Callahan, United States
National Park Ranger and a retired Captain of the US Army.
