Call for Papers: Asian Popular Culture
Oceanic Popular Culture Association Conference
Honolulu, HI
May 25-27, 2007
Chaminade University of Honolulu
Panel and individual paper proposals are now being accepted for the Asian popular Culture Area of the inaugural Oceanic Popular Culture Association Conference.
This panel will look at the use of popular culture in Asia. As educators, it’s increasingly important we embrace popular culture in order to grab our student’s interest and introduce them to the larger world of Asian culture. Professors, independent scholars, teachers, and professionals are encouraged to participate. Graduate students, advanced undergraduates (senior year), musicians, entertainers, professionals, and artists are especially welcome at the conference, which hopes to bridge the divide between academia and the general public.
We prefer presentations with minimal jargon that the general public can easily understand. Below are some suggestions for presentation / session topics related to the broad area of Asian popular culture and how it may be used to teach students about Asia. Any presentations involving media clips or performances would be highly welcome. Possible topics include:
• Anime and manga
• Asian popular music and hip-hop
• Asian television dramas and music
• Internet culture and video games
• Consumer culture and advertising
• Car culture (drifting, racing, car shows, etc)
• Stardom and celebrity culture
• Youth culture, fashion, etc.
• Workshop open to the general public (hip-hop workshop, songwriting, drawing)
If you are interested in being a presenter in this area, please send a 100- 250 word abstract, including paper/presentation title, via email to the address below.
