The third Millennium Development Goal of the UN is to "promote gender
equality and empower women". By supporting literacy initiatives for the young, UNESCO argues that we take big steps toward this MDG. The collective blog project www.chickliteracy.blogspot.com, a collection of creative non-fiction, will hopefully do much to raise awareness about the disparity between men and women's literacy rates in many nations and, in the near future, generate some funds for international literacy agencies. To this end, Canadian and American women contributors are invited to send in short (600 word) or long (1200 word) pieces, an act that celebrates women's literacy in the West (Canada and the US) and encourages egalitarian literacy
in other parts of the world where disparities exist and where literacy
rates could be improved. There is no deadline for submissions.
