I am interested in putting together a panel for AHA 2008 on resettlement as a state practice in the modern era. Ideally, the panel will address resettlement in diverse political contexts.
My own research look at mass migrations in the Russian Caucasus in the mid-19th century as a window into how officals sought to make the region into an integrated, productive part of the empire. These movements were neither fully forced, as many chose to relocate in hopes of a better lot, nor fully free, as violence threatened those who remained in place.
If you are interested in joining such a panel as a presenter, chair, or commentator, please e-mail me with a brief description of your paper by February 9.
Thank you,
