I am interested in putting together a panel (or joining an existing panel) for the 2008 AHA meeting in Washington D.C. on the theme of “Cosmopolitan Subjects.” My own research examines how French women in the 19th century used cosmopolitanism as a political strategy. I would be especially interested in papers that explore how individuals have defined themselves in cosmopolitan terms, in particular how they negotiate between cosmopolitanism and other identities (national, racial, gendered, etc).
