The purpose of the workshop is to explore various bottom-up and top-down approaches to peace building, keeping and making, towards a better understanding of the conditions of sustainable peace.

Roundtable topics and questions will include:
• What is the role of education in creating the conditions for sustainable peace?
• What is peace? Is it possible to define peace in its own terms, other than as an opposite condition to war and more fundamentally than as ceasefire?
• What are the responsibilities and potentials for states, interstate organizations, non-governmental organizations and individuals in bringing about peace? What are the relative merits of various forms of peace activism- from peace-keeping and peace-making interventions, to peace-building efforts within communities?
Sponsored by a SSHRC Aid to Small Universities grant.
