CALL FOR PAPERS
5th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF IGBO STUDIES ASSOCIATION
Venue: Howard University Law School, Washington, D.C.
Date: April 13-14, 2007
Theme: Ezi N'Ulo: Concept, Practice, Values & History of the Igbo Family and Community
Conference Description
The 5th International Conference of Igbo Studies Association seeks to examine the pivotal role of Ezi N'Ulo (Family) among Ndi Igbo. In choosing this theme we recognize the central role of the Igbo family in the survival of Ndi Igbo. We also recognize the challenges and tribulations facing the Igbo family in the Diaspora. Lately, the Igbo family in the Diaspora has experienced behavior correlates that are inimical to good family values such as high divorce rates, domestic abuse, and spousal homicide, and the failure of Igbo parents to socialize their children to be Igbo (including, speaking the Igbo language). The conference aims to expand the current literature in this area of Igbo studies in ways that will strengthen Ezi na Ulo of Ndi Igbo.
We welcome papers that explore the various aspects of the Igbo family using interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches. Specifically, we are interested in the following themes: Igbo family in historical setting; Theoretical perspectives on studying Igbo families; Marriage, socialization and child rearing practices among the Igbo; Igbo women and the family; Igbo youths, Medicine and healing; Changes in Igbo family as a result of emigration; Power relations within the Igbo family; Socialization and sex roles; the Impact of Western culture on the Igbo family; Domestic violence within the Igbo family; Economics, division of labor, and power sharing in the Igbo family, and Igbo family in the novel. We also welcome topics on the family that were not listed.
Submissions are welcome from lawyers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, political scientists, theologians, philosophers, linguists, novelists, graduate students, community leaders and activists. We hope to publish a selection of conference papers in 2008.
