UCN Second Annual Conference
CALL FOR PAPERS
The University College of the North invites submissions for an upcoming conference:
Northern Voices – Northern Realities
to be held at the Juniper Center in
Thompson, Manitoba on
May 15th and 16th, 2007.
We are seeking presentations on areas of research that stimulate discussion on issues in Aboriginal Studies. Areas include but are not restricted to: Indigenous research perspectives; Aboriginal people and the environment; social and cultural empowerment; Aboriginal women; community-based programs in the north; education; treaties; Indigenous knowledge; identity; economic and community development; Aboriginal languages. Presentations may take the form of a 20 minute paper and 10 minute question period; performance pieces, videos or other creative approaches are encouraged. We especially desire presentations that express and discuss critical approaches in Aboriginal studies as well as those that demonstrate active participation in Aboriginal communities.
The goals of this conference are:
to provide an opportunity for a community of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal researchers to share and advance our knowledge of Aboriginal issues; and
to inform, strengthen and promote our collective incentive to achieve positive change with respect to the current issues that affect Aboriginal communities in the north and throughout the world.
It is anticipated that selected papers will be published as a compilation of conference proceedings. Proposals for both individual and panel presentations are welcome. Abstracts of 250 words (with accompanying biographical information of no more than one page) should be submitted by mail, fax or email by February 2, 2007 to:
