HISTORY ACROSS THE DISCIPLINES 2007:
REGION, NATION, AND EMPIRE THROUGH THE AGES (Deadline Reminder)
The Dalhousie Graduate History Society invites graduate students from all branches of the Humanities and the Social Sciences to submit proposals for our upcoming History Across the Disciplines Graduate Student Conference, to take place at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on March 9th to 11th, 2007. The Keynote Speaker will be Dr. John G. Reid (St. Mary's University).
Now in its ninth year, History Across the Disciplines promotes interdisciplinary discussions of the past. The goal of this conference is to bring together and to foster communication between graduate students with diverse interests and approaches.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Region, Nation, and Empire through the Ages." This conference will explore the changing relationship between regional communities, nations, nation-states, colonization, and imperialism. Especially relevant are issues concerning rights and sovereignties, culture and identity, politics and government, the role of geographic and environmental factors, and spatial organization that continually define the physical and ideological boundaries of regions, nations, and empires. We welcome studies that take a comparative or ‘multi-layered’ approach, integrating the trajectories of regional, national, colonial, and imperial histories. There are no temporal or geographical limitations to this theme.
Possible themes for proposals may include, but are not restricted, to:
Aboriginal
Art and Visual Culture
Conflict and War
Cultural Memory
Gender and Sexuality
Geography and Environment
Government and Politics
Historiography and Theory
Labour
Mapping
‘Race’ and Ethnicity
Religion and Sectarianism
Sovereignty and Rights
Interested applicants should submit a 250 word abstract and curricula vitae to dalconference07@gmail.com. Deadline for submission is January 26th, 2006. Participants will be given approximately 20 minutes for their presentations. We also welcome participants to submit papers between 3000 and 5000 words in length to be considered for the annual John Flint Prize. Submissions for the Flint Prize should offer an extended discussion of a conference participant’s presentation. The deadline for Flint Prize submissions is February 16th, 2007.
