Call for Papers
We are seeking submissions for an anthology, to be tentatively published by Ohio University Press, of artwork and artist's essays about the experience of motherhood. We are particularly interested in art, image/essays, personal narratives, and art historical/visual culture essays about the following topics: maternal ambivalence, adoption, mothering adolescents, becoming a mother through the use of assisted reproductive technologies, parenting a child while experiencing geographic and/or cultural displacement, queer parenting, and mothering a child outside of traditional biological parameters. This anthology will be based around a series of first person-essays, artist's essays accompanied by images, and art historical essays that have a strong personal component. While there are many excellent theoretical and critical books and essays about motherhood that have informed this anthology, we would prefer writing that keeps academic references and footnotes to a minimum. Written submissions should be around 3,000-4,000 words. Artwork submissions must be able to be reproduced in black and white. We are particularly interested in art that is already geared towards the printed format, such as text/image essays or text used aesthetically. Poetry submissions will be considered as well.
Send 500 word abstract or PDF/jpegs of art work and copy of curriculum vitae to Jennie Klein and Myrel Chernick at kleinj1@ohio.edu and myrelch@verizon.net by March 1, 2007. Completed essays and art work will be due by May 1, 2007.
