The Valley Women’s History Collaborative (VWHC) has recently embarked on a research project documenting the activity of the Mary Vazquez Softball League of the Pioneer Valley. Research on the League, begun in 1977 and still active today, provides community activists and historians the opportunity to explore such issues as the intersection of sports, politics, sexuality, and “second wave” feminism, and the impact of Title IX on women’s athletics. VWHC members are currently conducting interviews of league founders and players that will form the basis of a manuscript and oral history collection housed in Special Collections at the University of Massachusetts. The collaborative is attempting to determine whether there are similar projects underway and whether activists/scholars are interested in presenting their research with Collaborative associates at the Berkshire (deadline Feb. 1) or other appropriate conferences. Those interested in learning more about the Mary Vazquez project can visit the VWHC website at http://www.umass.edu/vwhc/about.html and contact me off list.
