For a proposed panel at the American Studies Association (ASA) Convention in Philadelphia, October 11-14, 2007 tentatively entitled "U.S. Penitentiaries: Walnut Street and Beyond". The Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia was the first penitentiary in the United States. We will explore its history, its legacy, and its influence on prison literature in this interdisciplinary panel.
