Submission Deadline for abstracts: 1 May 2007

This conference cycle organized annually by Enkidu Magazine and the International Society for Cultural History and Cultural Studies (CHiCS) in Mexico City is devoted to colonial and post colonial remembering and forgetfulness viewed from a wide range of different interdisciplinary perspectives with particular attention to communicative issues and reflections on „self“ and „otherness“, memories, historical myths and other expressions of historical and political memory.

„Sensing the Other, Living in Nepantla: Colonial and Post-Colonial Remembering and Forgetfulness“ is dedicated to the Nahua Historian Domingo Francisco de San Antón Muñón Chimalpahin Quauhtlehuanitzin (1579-1660), who more than a century after the Spanish conquest narrated and mediated in his native language Nahuatl, the history of Central Mexico and in particular his own altepetl (ethnic state unit in Central Mexico before and after the conquest) Chalco.

We welcome submissions from all branches of the social sciences, humanities, as well as the arts. Graduate students are encouraged to participate.

The program is organised in a large number of special thematic sessions and subconferences covering a diverse series of topics extending from a special session on "Voices of slaves in inquisitorial records" to "Education and Nation-Building in Latin America" and "Representations of the 'Other' on the Theater Stage".

Papers will be considered on related themes and topics from a wide range of perspectives. Presenters are encouraged to interpret the themes of the conference broadly and may explore any historical period, with any geographic focus.

500 word abstracts should be submitted to the organising committee in English, Castilian, German or French by 1 May, 2007. The conference languages will be English and Castilian.

We are pleased to announce that all printed conference materials that will be distributed during the conference, also will be available in large print or Braille. In several sessions, sign language interpreters for ASL (American Sign Language) and Mexican Sign Language will also be available. If you require sign language interpretation during your session, or you would like to distribute hand-outs or other materials in Braille during your presentation, please indicate this in the registration form.

Interpretations of the conference theme ranging from the predictable to the surprising are encouraged.

The conference will focus on conceptualizations and representations of cultural categories in colonial and post colonial realities, and the ways in which individuals have understood and enacted these frameworks in their lives. Among the themes of interest are the following:

• Voice and reflexivity in oral and written records

• Language, Authority and Silence
• Other Suggestions

Interdisciplinary perspectives are especially welcome since all these topics in themselves stretch across several disciplines: history, literary studies, linguistics, psychology, political sciences, pedagogy, ethnology, anthropology, sociology...

Papers should be of approximately 30 minutes duration (circa 8 - 10 pages). Other forms of presentation, for instance workshops, panel debates and poster sessions will be considered on request.

Graduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to attend and present papers. Selected papers from the conference will be published in book form.

* Proposals for Panel Sessions:

Typically, a panel of academic papers should include 3 (maximum 4) speakers and 1 moderator. Each session will last for 2 hours allowing for 30 minutes for each speaker and a further 30 minutes for questions and discussion.

Proposers should submit:

(1) session title and a session intro (ca 100 words),

(2) paper titles,

(3) abstracts for each paper (500 words),

(4) short biography for each participant and the panel chair (ca 100-150 words),

(5) institutional affiliation and address for each participant,

(6) audio-visual and other technical requirements.

Abstracts are to be submitted by 1 May, 2007, along with the presenter’s name, address, telephone, email, and institutional affiliation as well as a short biography (ca 100-150 words). It is recommended to use the form here when submitting an abstract. However, abstracts will also be accepted as e-mail attachments to info@enkidumagazine.com .

All correspondence for this conference will be conducted via email. You will be notified by 15 June, 2007 whether your proposal has been accepted or rejected. Full conference papers should be submitted by the 1st of October 2006. Abstracts and summaries of the conference papers will be made available at the conference web page from August 2006.
