Gender and Communities
3-day National Seminar
15th to 17th March, 2007
Call for Papers
We intend to explore the relationship between gender and community from a multidisciplinary approach. Hitherto most of the research on gender and community in India has tended to focus on status of women in a particular community by examining various sources and through diverse disciplinary methods such as ethnographical and sociological studies; examination of religious scriptures; govt. and non govt. statistical data analysis etc. The present seminar is a departure from these ways of simply examining the status of women within a particular community.
• We would like to see how the notion of men and women; how the notion of what they should do or not do (gender system) is constitutive of the definition of a community.
• We also would like to see how the borders of a community in the context of inter-community exchanges (clashes, alliance, competition etc.) shape the notions of gender or how the notions of gender give rise to such inter-community exchanges.
• Though the dominant notion of community is that of a caste and religion based one, we would like to include other conceptualizations of communities in relation to gender: such as imagined community; fuzzy/enumerated communities; technology-based communities e.g. radio community, internet community; women-only communities such as witches, prostitutes; profession-based communities such as prostitutes, nursing community; village community etc.
• We welcome papers from any discipline (Humanities, social science and science) or those that are inter or multidisciplinary in nature.
The selected participants (from India) would be reimbursed their travel expenses and will be provided local hospitality.
