For the forthcoming 32nd Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil (May 28 - June 1, 2007), we are planning to assemble a panel on music in the Caribbean and its diaspora, examining music from a variety of perspectives - as a form of political protest, an agent of social activism, a means of cultural resistance, a form of youth protest, a way of reframing individual and collective identity. We are envisioning a broad spectrum of contributions from the Caribbean and its diaspora, incorporating popular music as well as the "alternative" music scene. For example, interest has been expressed in presenting papers on Cuban reggae and Rasta as well as Haitian/Haitian-American hip-hop. Papers may be presented in English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French. Those interested in submitting a paper proposal should contact the panel organizer directly: Dr. Ellen M. Schnepel (CIFAS, New York) at: schnepel@att.net.
(Please keep in mind the deadline for submission of the panel/paper abstracts to the CSA organizers has now been extended to January 2nd.) For more information on the conference, please check the web site:
