What makes or made a textbook a textbook?
The nature and identity of a teaching aid examined more closely

11th Meeting of the “Internationale Gesellschaft für Historische und Systematische Schulbuchforschung”

Theme

In recent decades, much attention has been devoted to the study of the textbook both historically and theoretically. Generally, the concern has been for the teaching content. Thus, for example, one wonders how values and norms are rendered in the subject matter presented. But textbooks are more than a mirror of the society, for they are not only an essential component of the teaching process but also an icon of the institution in which they are used. We can hardly imagine an institution without textbooks, and, inversely, it is only this institution that gives the raison d’être to textbooks. As yet, little historical and systematic research has been done on the way textbooks acquire their social identity. The international association for historical and systematic textbook research, which will meet for the fist time outside of Germany in 2007, has taken up this question. Three lecturers (Agustín Escolano, Elisabeth Smyth & Thomas Hoene) will approach the question on the basis of their research. We will like to confront their insights with the results of your study.

Paper proposals of a maximum of 300 words will be received by Dr. Angelo Van Gorp by 1 March 2007 (Angelo.vangorp@ped.kuleuven.be). Please give your name, institution, e-mail address and postal address. If there are several authors, please indicate the contact person. You will be informed of the acceptance of your proposal by 1 April 2007 at the latest.

The scientific committee consists of E. Matthes (Internationale Gesellschaft für Historische und Systematische Schulbuchforschung), Robert Barbry (Stedelijk Onderwijsmuseum Ieper), Angelo Van Gorp (BNVGOO), Tom Verschaffel (Centrum voor de Historische Studie van Interculturele Relaties, 1750-2000), Honoré Vinck (Centre Aequatoria), Michel Berré (Centre du Livre - UMH), Frank Simon (Red Patre Manes – Alfa project) and Marc Depaepe (Subfaculteit PPW K.U.Leuven Campus Kortrijk).

Practical information :

The meeting will take place in Ypres on the 5th and 6th of October 2007 (for more information about Ypres, see www.Ieper.be). Ypres offers extensive hotel accommodation in several price classes. A list of hotels will be provided upon your definitive registration. The registration fee for this two-day conference is 80 €. More information can be obtained from Dr. Angelo van Gorp or from the other members of the scientific committee.

Thema

In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde dem Studium des Schulbuches, sowohl aus historischer als auch aus theoretischer Sicht, viel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. In den meisten Fällen beugt man sich dabei über den Lehrinhalt. So fragt man sich z.B., wie Werte und Normen in dem angebotenen Lehrstoff vermittelt werden. Aber Schulbücher sind mehr als nur ein Spiegel der Gesellschaft. Sie sind nicht nur ein wesentliches Element des Lernprozesses, sondern auch eine Ikone der Einrichtung, in der sie verwendet werden. Wir können uns nur schwer eine Einrichtung ohne Schulbücher vorstellen, und umgekehrt verleiht nur diese Einrichtung den Schulbüchern ihre Daseinsberechtigung. Über die Art und Weise, in der Schulbücher ihre gesellschaftliche Identität erhalten, wurde bisher nur wenig historische und systematische Forschung betrieben. Die Internationale Gesellschaft für Historische und Systematische Schulbuchforschung, die 2007 erstmals außerhalb Deutschlands tagen wird, hat sich diese Frage zueigen gemacht. Drei Referenten (Agustín Escolano, Elisabeth Smyth und Thomas Hoene) werden sich dieser Frage aus der Sicht ihrer Forschungsarbeiten zuwenden. Wir würden deren Erkenntnisse gerne den Ergebnissen Ihrer Untersuchungen gegenüberstellen.

Beitragsentwürfe von max. 300 Worten sind bis zum 1. März 2007 bei Dr. Angelo Van Gorp (Angelo.vangorp@ped.kuleuven.be) von Herzen willkommen. Geben Sie bitte Ihren Namen, das Institut, die E-Mail-Adresse und die Postanschrift an. Bei mehreren Autoren bitte den Namen der Kontaktperson mitteilen. Bis spätestens 1. April 2007 erhalten Sie dann eine Nachricht über die eventuelle Annahme Ihres Vorschlags.
