Announcing the publication of the volume "1956: European and Global Perspectives" (Leipzig: Leipziger Universitaetsverlag, 2006),edited by Carole Fink (The Ohio State University), Frank Hadler (University of Leipzig) and Tomasz Schramm (University of Poznan), based on two conferences devoted to that epochal year a half century ago.The volume assembles new scholarship based on original research and providing a long-term perspective on the events, including the 20th congress of the CPSU, the Hungarian and Polish revolutions, the Sinai-Suez crisis and the birth of the Common Market; it also includes social and cultural developments, including the Melbourne Olympics, the papacy and the Cold War, and the emerging oil problem in global affairs.
