The USC Art History Department’s Graduate Student Symposium will provide a platform for an extended consideration of function and meaning, original intention and subsequent interpretation. Papers should be between 15 and 20 minutes in length. Areas of inquiry might explore the effect on the reception and interpretation of an object when it is denied its original functionality and labeled as “art” or when it is used for commercial or political purposes, in the service of cultural hegemony or the colonial project. We welcome submissions from all areas of art history and related fields. Abstracts of no more than 500 words, a current CV, and contact information should be submitted.
