A growing field of studies in political transitions has extended the discourses of truth commissions across the humanities and social sciences. However the political economy of transitions, truth commissions, the ways these shape social meaning and frame understandings of the relationship between memory and justice remains relatively absent from existing theoretical frameworks. This special issue of Antípoda invites submissions that interrogate the ways in which reconciliation, nation-building and the politics of memory in “transitional” settings intersect with and are shaped by the dominant global political economy. We encourage submissions that critically engage and expand current theoretical frameworks across disciplines on technologies of transitional governance such as truth commissions. Contributions that address one or more of the following questions are particularly encouraged: How are truth commissions embedded in the politics of memory as a discourse about "the past" and in the social politics of memorialisation? What kinds of subjectivities and speaking positions are informed or prohibited through these politics and what kinds of claims for justice may or may not be mobilised? How is atrocity integrated into the epistemic and cognitive frameworks of truth commissions and what kinds of social meanings are constructed? What kinds of social meanings do truth commissions generate and legitimise and what do they delegitimise and why?
