Call for Applications to participate in an NEH seminar for college and university professors, on Scottish Enlightenment Aesthetics and its German Reception. All scholars interested in aesthetics, the history of aesthetics, the Scottish or German Enlightenments, and (more broadly) the history of art, literature, philosophy, or ideas, of eighteenth century Europe are encouraged to apply. The seminar will be held at St. Andrews University, Scotland July 23-August 10, 2007, and will be directed by Paul Guyer (Department of Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania) and Rachel Zuckert (Department of Philosophy, Northwestern University). The seminar will be primarily devoted to rigorous discussion of central works of Scottish and German enlightenment aesthetics, but will also include guest lectures by three experts on Scottish enlightenment aesthetics:James Harris (Department of Philosophy, St. Andrews University), Alexander Broadie (Department of Philosophy, Glasgow University), and Peter Jones (Humanities Institute, University of Edinburgh, emeritus). Participants will also be given ample time to pursue independent research projects on topics related to the seminar themes, and to go on field trips to sites relevant to the texts under discussion. For further information concerning the seminar format, readings, topics, eligibility, and application requirements, please contact Daniel Gross (contact information included in this ad).
