Masculinity and the Other is an interdisciplinary conference taking place at Balliol College, University of Oxford on 29th and 30th August 2006. We hope to bring together scholars studying masculinities in a variety of fields, including literature, history, art history, sociology and philosopy, to explore some of the forms of 'otherness' against which ideas of masculinity have been defined over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By taking an interdisciplinary approach to the question we hope to uncover a fuller and more complex picture of what, historically, socially and culturally, it means to be a man.
Potential subjects include, but are not limited to:
*Age, maturity and life cycle *Education
*Religion and spirituality *Enemies and allies
*Heroes *Race
*Class *Imperialism
*Images of 'otherness' *Sexuality
*Employment *Misbehaviour and social control
*Brutishness and animality *Humanism
Abstract Deadline: March 15th, 2007
We welcome proposals for both panels and individual papers. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words. Please ensure that a title, your name, affiliation and email address are included with your abstract. We prefer to receive abstracts by email:
