Rafis Abazov will talk about his new book – The Culture and Customs of the Central Asian Republics (Greenwood Press, 2007). The focus of the talk will be contemporary development in the intricate cultural landscape of Central Asia and post-Iron-Curtain effects, such as the return of some nearly forgotten traditions and resurgence of Islamic identity. The author will also discuss why the advent of western culture into the major metropolitan areas in the region has been welcomed in Central Asia, in sharp contrast to its poor reception in neighboring Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle East.
