We are soliciting papers that investigate the use, spread, enjoyment, or culture,of tobacco in the Russian Empire, Soviet Union, or Post-Soviet states. Additionally, we are interested in the international tobacco trade as it involves these regions as producers or consumers. Our goal is to prepare a broadly comparative volume drawing on all academic disciplines to illuminate the history of tobacco use and production as a cultural, economic, and political context in the lands of the Russian Empire.
In the short-term, we are preparing two panels for the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) in New Orleans in November 2008. We forsee one panel focused on imperial Russian (approximately up to 1900) and one for modern Russia. If you are interested in presenting a paper within one of these panels and further refining the paper for an edited volume, please contact either myself or Matt Romaniello at the addresses listed below. We will be available to discuss the panels and the future volume at this year's AAASS meeting in Washington DC.
