Contributions are now being solicited for a special session on seventeenth-century literature at this year’s meeting of the College English Association (CEA) in New Orleans. Because the conference theme centers on “Empathy and Ethics,” papers on seventeenth-century women’s writing, issues of colonialism and multiculturalism, and other subjects that invite readers to think beyond the traditional canon of seventeenth-century literature when considering issues relating to empathy and ethics are particularly welcome.
Some possible avenues of inquiry might include (but are certainly not limited to):
ethical dilemmas in seventeenth-century literature
science, technology, and the changing contours of ethics
rhetorical strategies of religious persecution, martyrdom, and conversion narratives
torture, pain, and suffering as a literary and/or cultural condition
modes of eliciting empathy through publication (whether in print or manuscript)
