Publishers' Bindings Online, 1815-1930: The Art of Books (PBO) is a collaborative digital resource that provides virtual access to an impressive of decorative book bindings from the 19th and early 20th centuries -- a unique and valuable glimpse into what was being published, bought, sold, and read in America.
The libraries of The University of Alabama and The University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed this state-of-the-art online resource that supports a growing interest in the study, appreciation, and understanding of the book as artifact.
PBO increases awareness of the significance of the book bindings themselves as mirrors of American History, life, and culture and marvels of industrial and graphic design.
PBO and its bounty of resources, including galleries, essays, and lesson plans, allow for a greater understanding of the decorative techniques, styles, materials, and cultural information present in the bindings, as well as the designers, artists, and publishing companies that produced them.
