About the book: This is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary project that will allow members from all disciplines to participate in the writing of the economic history of Kenya. The book will be in two volumes, whose aim is to produce a comprehensive economic history of Kenya focusing on themes that have been ignored or not adequately covered by previous books. With the advent of new research methodologies and theoretical frameworks, new questions have unearthed new information that chapters in these volumes should capture. With the new clamor for indigenous knowledge and traditional science, technology, trades and artisan skills, amidst effects of globalization, especially Northern corporatism in the Kenyan economy, there are new dynamics that need to be addressed.
Contributors are welcome to write under any of the following themes: Gender; Labor; Fishing; Pastoralism; Trade & Commerce; Industry; Mining – titanium, gold, etc; Economic Planning and Management; Economic Organizations – MNCs/TNCs; The legacy of the Colonial Economy; Transport and Communication; Entrepreneurship; Informal sector - Jua Kali; Money, Currency and Banking; Science and Technology; Environment; Food – famines, droughts; Health and Nutrition; Women and the Economy; Urbanization; Water; Agriculture; NGOs and CBOs; Education; Pre-colonial economic practices – pot-making, mat-making, etc; youth and development; Brain drain/gain; etc
Submission of chapter proposals/abstracts: If you are interested in contributing a chapter to this volume, you are kindly requested to submit a short proposal/abstract of less than 500 words, consisting of a full title with a brief description of what you intend to cover in your chapter. This should be e-mailed to amutabim@cwu.edu as an MS or RTF attachment before December 30, 2006. After the evaluation of your proposal by the editors, you will be informed within one week whether your chapter will be included in one of the volumes or not.
Dealine for Draft chapters: Draft chapters of accepted proposals will be expected by March 20, 2007, saved under MS or RTF and submitted electronically to amutabim@cwu.edu. The chapters should not be more than 25 pages (or less than 7,000 words), in 12-point font, (preferably Times New Roman), and double-spaced. Attach a bio of 150 words, as a separate file. It is hoped that the book will be published in Kenya or /and the United States and should be ready by May 30 2007.
