Call for Papers
Diasporic Counterpoint: Africans and Asians in Global Perspective

and the Program in Asian American Studies

April 20 and 21, 2007
The Center for African American History and the Program in Asian American Studies invites paper proposals for “Diasporic Counterpoint: Africans and Asians in Global Perspective.” The third annual conference of the Center for African American History to focus on diaspora, this conference will explore intersections among African and Asian diasporas. The conference particularly welcomes papers with a comparative focus, but papers concentrating on either African or Asian diasporas are also welcome. The following are some broad themes to be included in the conference. This list is merely a starting point, and proposals on other themes related to the conference are encouraged.
labor
social movements and organizing
migration patterns
spirituality and religion
cultural expression
creolization and authenticity
Proposals should include the following:
a one-page abstract
a one-page vita
full contact information for the paper presenter
Proposals should be sent by email to
asianamerican@northwestern.edu
and
d-hine@northwestern.edu
under the subject header “African/Asian Diaspora Conference.”
Proposals should be submitted by Nov. 1, 2006.
Decisions will be announced by Dec. 1, 2006.
The finished paper is due Feb. 15, 2007 for circulation to respondents.
The papers will be collected and considered for inclusion in a planned edited anthology to be submitted to the University of Illinois Press for publication consideration.
