Burl Ives, a native of Jasper County, Illinois, and alumnus of Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, gained fame as a balladeer, Broadway actor, writer, movie star and narrator. His visibility during the 1950s made him a natural target of HUAC investigations, but his testimony deflected attention from him and toward other singers, most notably Pete Seeger. The Embarras Valley Film Festival, named for the river that runs through East Central Illinois, features a day-long scholarly symposium that links Ives to historic and cultural change during his long life (1909-1995) and features films spanning Ives' career.
