2nd Annual History Graduate Student Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS
The HGSA at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce its 2nd Annual History Graduate Student Conference to be held 8-9 February 2007 and to issue this call for papers to graduate students of all levels.
This conference, to be held at the University of Maryland, College Park Campus, will provide a forum for graduate students to present their research to their peers, as well as a network for future dialogues. All panel speakers and commentators will be graduate students. Prizes will be awarded for the best papers as judged by a committee of graduate students.
This conference is wide-ranging and multi-faceted in its scope; therefore interested scholars are strongly urged to propose papers which deal with all topics and approaches to history, and which encompass all geographical and chronological boundaries.
Suggested paper topics include, but are not limited to:
- Cultural exchange;
- Imperialism and Empire;
- Religion and the power of belief; and
- Personal, group or national identity.
Please note that, although the conference planners encourage papers grounded in critical theory and methodology as well as papers focused on insights more commonly associated with other disciplines (e.g. sociology, economics, musicology), this is an historical conference and scholars must present historically sound research. Please do not submit papers that deal only with current public policy issues.
Paper proposals must be submitted by 16 October 2006.
Proposals must be no more than 300 words and should include scholar’s name, home institution, e-mail address, the fundamental research question addressed in the paper, the evidence and methodological approaches to be used, and the argument to be made.
Please do not submit panel proposals. The HGSA Graduate Conference Committee will evaluate all proposals and form panels accordingly. If selected, participants will be asked to submit a final version of their paper by 5 January 2007.
