Seeking Civil Rights: Texans and the Quest for Social Justice
Essays in Honor of Robert Arnold “Bob” Calvert
Bob Calvert’s colleagues and students seek to remember his influence on Texas history through a collection of essays tentatively titled: Seeking Civil Rights: Texans and the Quest for Social Justice (Essays in Honor of Robert Arnold “Bob” Calvert). The volume will explore the ways members of various groups in Texas struggled to secure their rights as citizens to liberty and equality between Reconstruction and the recent past, and the mixed results of their efforts. In general, the essays will represent the diverse approaches to securing liberty and equality, the reasoning behind resistance to such efforts and the consequences of both quests. Essays can explore several themes including but not limited to race, gender and class inequity, tensions between public and private reform efforts, contests between local, state and national governments, and the consequences of integration in public education, housing or employment in Texas. The book will ideally include eight to ten previously unpublished essays of 6,000 words excluding endnotes. The anthology will be useful in courses on Texas history, legal history, race and ethnic studies, and southern history.
