The Editorial Committee of the Graduate Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies is pleased to announce the release of Volume 4 Number 1. For this special issue contributors have turned their attention towards both the literal and metaphorical elements of movement. Focusing on the theme ‘Navigating the Future: Asia-Pacific pathways’, authors have considered the diverse ways in which historical and contemporary movements of people, technologies, and ideas have shaped, and continues to shape the practices and experiences of the Asia-Pacific region and its peoples. Within this focus there is a broad definition of what might be interpreted as movement: from macro-level voyages, displacements and migrations to everyday experiences of nations, cities and neighbourhoods. As a result, the final contributions to this edition have interpreted the theme in a diverse but insightful manner. They include discussions of transnational trajectories, the intersection of mobility, tradition and adaptation, methodological movements, patterns of migrant participation in the labour force and literary co-operation and competition.
