The interdisciplinary workshop, “Putting Memory in Place,” will be held at Indiana University Bloomington, February 21-23, 2007. The workshop will bring together scholars, practitioners, and members of the public to explore the relationship between memory and place, with a view to identifying and proposing new technologies that enable local and global communities to resist forces of forgetting, be they environmental, biological or political. Participants will read and discuss pre-circulated papers on theories and practices relating place to communal/individual remembering and forgetting (for example, the impact on memory and place of "lost places" such as Gulf Coast communities). We will explore ways that the humanities can resist the forces of forgetting, and rebuild or sustain the topsoil of places in memory. We will identify how memories and remembering, as a civic engagement process, benefit individuals and communities, and will conceptualize a pilot project in which information technologies serve to connect memories with places. Proceedings and/or an edited volume will also be developed by the workshop organizers in cooperation with authors and discussants.
Papers and discussants will be selected by an interdisciplinary committee. The application consists of current CV, along with a two-page paper abstract or a two-page description of the potential contributions one can make to the workshop as a discussant. Applications may be submitted as email attachments or via regular mail.
