My name is Stephanie Assmann and I’m based at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan as a lecturer. I am looking for participants to organize a panel on Food/Food Culture in Asia for the Annual Meeting of the Association for Asian Studies which will take place in Boston from March 22 - 25, 2007. I am currently conducting research on the topic of Slow Food in Japan. Papers that address food and food culture in Asian countries either from a sociological/anthropological angle or from a historical or philosophical point of view are very welcome. Possible topics I could imagine are for example local food cultures versus the emergence of globalizing food cultures, the increasing popularity of Asian foods in countries outside Asia, gender and/or social (in)equality in relation to food, food as depicted in art and literature. These are just some broad ideas and I am very open for other topics and suggestions. Anyone who is working on Food/Food Culture in Asian countries and would be interested to join this panel, please contact me at StAssmann@aol.com until 2 August 2006.
