With the 1st International Oral History Congress (26-28 October 2006, Porto, Portugal) we aim to call the Portuguese public’s attention to this discipline by joining together in Portugal leading international oral historians and Portuguese researchers who explore this field. Our main goal is to reflect about Oral History in a scientific way, reviewing its past trajectory, and, drawing upon its recent developments, evaluating the future. We are most pleased to announce the confirmed participation of the following speakers: Federico Lorenz, Antonio Montenegro, Regina Neto, Robert Perks, Alessandro Portelli, Alistair Thomson, Stephen Weiss, Paula Godinho, Paula Gonzalez, Jorge Rocha, and Karen Worcman.
Nowadays, it is vital that any approach to Contemporary History contemplates life histories and similar biographical sources. In this context, Oral History emerges as a privileged methodology of collecting ‘living’ memories through recorded interviews, especially in audio format. Essential to the understanding of our recent past, Oral History is the story of the unique life experiences of each individual, and it allows us to draw a richer and deeper picture of the past, exploring aspects of historical reality that normally are not documented. It is History lived and told in the first person. A Living History.
