The SCMS Middle East Caucus seeks paper proposals for a panel on contemporary issues in Middle East film and media to be held at the SCMS conference, March 8-11, 2007 in Chicago. Possible topics include: effects of (neo)colonialism on national film production; formal and generic transformations within Syrian, Egyptian, Lebanese, and Moroccan cinemas; (mis)representations of gender and sexuality, religion and race in Arab, Israeli, and Central Asian film; Israeli-Palestinian conflict cinema; media and documentary reportage of U.S. regional invasions and related policies; diaspora cinemas (Turkish, Palestinian, Iranian); experimental interventions. Please send 150-200-word abstract and a brief biographical note.
