This online workshop explores various trends in contemporary poetry as well as introduces participants to some standard forms and meters of traditional poetry.
Weekly writing exercises and critiques take participants through the revision process with the goal of producing a number of poems.
The course also explores the craft and the creative process. Textbook: Thirteen Ways of Looking for a Poem: A Guide to Writing Poetry by Bishop.
Enrollment limited to 15 participants. Available for UCLA transferable credit.
Instructor: Carol Potter, MFA, poet whose third book of poetry, Short History of Pets, won the Cleveland State University Poetry Center Award and Balcones Award. Ms. Potter's poetry has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Prairie Schooner, Poetry, The American Poetry Review, Field, and The Iowa Review. Her fourth book of poems will be published in 2006 by Red Hen Press.
