Passion, Play and the everyday: Oral history and the consumer society. 17-18 June 2006
This event will explore how people have been affected by changing lifestyles as the ‘consumer society’ has grown, in sport, food, fashion, music, media, tourism, heritage, health, education and technology. Questions will be asked about changes in political, corporate and consumer power, the influence of the media, individual and group identity, the relation between choice, freedom and regulation, ethical consumption, pleasure and desire, the changing role of leisure and the relationship between consumption and production.
The conference will bring a wide variety of people to Sheffield who use oral history in their work or have an interest in the media, museums, education, community history and entertainment. It will also appeal to anyone interested in local history, sports history and the consumer society.
